Co-owners Charles "Buddy" Dudley and David Honeycutt opened Charles David Salon in 1995 on Boston’s prestigious south shore in the beautiful town of Norwell. Color Director, Charles “Buddy” Dudley was a talented, popular local colorist and Salon Manager, David Honeycutt had many years experience in luxury hotel management and together they brought the hospitality industry to the beauty industry.
The small, unknown salon enjoyed great success from the beginning and earned its place on Salon Today magazines “Top 200 – fastest growing salons in America” for four consecutive years. The salon immediately went to work on “giving back” to the community with its first fashion show to benefit breast cancer. (we have a section devoted to just our “giving back” to our community; as salon owners if we don’t make this important then our team won’t either and may not donate their time so freely; it’s so important; please give them any credit you feel they deserve). One of the models was super model Melanie Cheskin who donated her time and later that year helped land Charles his first Glamour magazine shoot with Melanie as his highlighting model.
In the early years, Charles was asked to be on Redken’s Color Task Force dealing with the development and education for Redken’s popular hair coloring, Color Fusion, and Charles David was used as a testing salon in the Boston area. Charles and the talented team’s work has been seen in Glamour, First for Women, Passion, Marie Claire, Elle, Coiffure OZ and team member Kristen Barry’s work has appeared on the cover of Good Housekeeping and salon Educational Director, Lynne Moules’ work has appeared in Modern Salon. Charles was interviewed in Hair Coloring and Design magazine’s feature “Colorist on Colorist” by accomplished colorist, David Stanko. In October of 2006 he and salon Educational Director, Kelly Beery, were featured in a step-by-step editorial “From Trashed to Class –MIRACLE MAKEOVER” in Modern Salon magazine. Charles was invited to perform on stage as a Guest Performing Artist with his long time mentor, hair coloring legend Beth Minardi at the 2005 “Hair Color America with Beth Minardi” in Chicago. Kristen Barry of the Charles David team performed the design and finishing for his models. He was invited back for a second year as a member of Beth’s “Team Minardi” in 2006. This is one of the leading educational events in the country with an audience of over 500 of the most advanced colorists from around the world. Charles has a love for hair coloring and his dedication to his craft have made him one of the most popular and well respected colorist in our region and beyond.
General Manager, David Honeycutt and the management team have led the salon through numerous expansions and by 2005 had a team of over 50 of the areas best beauty professionals. “Education is the key to this ever-changing industry and we have always made it our quest to find ways to afford the best education for our team that we can,” states Honeycutt. “Distributors and Manufacturers don’t support your educational effort unless you buy a lot of product or can afford to pay for education.” That all changed when they began working with Sammy LaQuale of Masello Salon Services, the salon’s regional distributor for Redken. Not only did Masello open the doors to a lot of education they sponsored, Sammy LaQuale showed them the benefits for all concerned when salons partner with their distributor and manufacturer. “We owe a lot of gratitude to Sammy LaQuale” states both Honeycutt and Dudley.
In 2003 the salon dropped all product lines and became a Redken Elite Salon. “The biggest reason we became elite was to be able to bring the best education in the country to our team “up close and personal” states Honeycutt and Dudley. “The opportunities to afford world class Redken educators for our team through purchase rewards have made the quality of the work we provide to our guests better and better.” The salon has purchased more Redken hair coloring and styling products than any salon in the world in 2005 and 2006 thus affording the salon the opportunity to host an array of Redken artist including a two day “Mini-Symposium” with industry greats Chris Baron and Kris Sorbie. Their educational efforts paid off and the salon made Launchpad Magazine's “A-List, Top 20 Salons & Spas” in America in 2005.
In January 2007 the team enjoyed their biggest honor, winning the coveted Redken Salon of the Year Award for the second consecutive year in a row at the 2007 Redken International Symposium in Las Vegas attended by 10,000 beauty professionals from around the world. “Charles David Salon is a shining example within the beauty industry of how to successfully market their business as well as provide ongoing education for their staff and the best possible service for their guests, “notes Pat Parenty, Sr. Vice President and General Manager for Redken. The salon is the first to receive this award for a second time. “This honor from Redken and working with Beth Minardi have been my greatest professional experiences” states Dudley while Honeycutt adds that “receiving the Salon of the Year Award by beauty industry icon, Ann Mincey and Redken sending us Peter Millard to help direct us in our renovations was the best for him.” “Peter Millard has worked for Este Lauder, Polo and his new book, Reinventing Spaces is a must read tool for all salon owners” says Honeycutt.
Locally the salon has won the South Shore Living magazines “Best of the South Shore” for three consecutive years and won regional gold for “Best Salon” in the Community Choice Awards for four years in a row. Charles David Salon is a proud member of the South Shore Hospitals “President’s Circle” for their donations and contributions.

Norwell, MASS., February 9, 2005 -
Charles David Hair Color & Design Centre in Norwell has just been named the Elite Salon of the Year Award, presented at the Redken 2005 International Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The prestigious international award recognized the salon over thousands of hair salons from 45 countries and was attributed to Charles David’s business growth, community contributions and commitment to world-class design and education for its employees.
Charles David Salon is not only financially prosperous, they’ve also been successful in promoting themselves as leaders among their employees, clients and communities by supporting a retail friendly atmosphere, continuing education and charitable efforts,” states Pat Parenty, senior vice president and general manager of Redken.
Charles David Hair Color & Design Centre opened in Norwell in 1995 by owners David Honeycutt and Charles “Buddy” Dudley. The independent salon has expanded three times since it opened, each time doubling in size, sales and staff. The salon’s most recent renovations were guided by world-renowned interior and display designer, Peter Mallad, who has consulted extensively with Ralph Lauren, Este Lauder and Giorgio Armani.
“We are grateful to our 52 dedicated employees who are the real reason for our success and to our many loyal clients who are a part of our ever-growing family,” said David Honeycutt, co-owner of Charles David. “As an independent salon, we are proud to receive such international recognition particularly over much larger salons and chains in New York, LA and other countries. It is an affirmation of our business model that emphasizes ongoing education for our staff, the importance of hospitality in the salon industry, and the satisfaction that comes from giving back to the community.
Each year the salon brings in some of the world’s most sought-after hair colorists and stylists to provide up close and personal educational events for its employees, in addition to participating in leading educational symposia all over the country.
“Hair design and color is like a fingerprint that is unique to each person,” said Charles Dudley, co-owner and Color Director of the salon. “It is as much a science as an art form, and requires constant education in technique and practice. “Buddy” is a recognized coloring expert and has contributed to the development of products by some of the world’s largest hair product companies. His work has been seen in various publications including First for Women, Glamour and Process magazines. “I owe much of my success to my mentor, leading hair colorist Beth Minardi who had taught me so much and inspired me even more and to Redken and Masello Salon Services for giving us great products to work with and for being our partners in the beauty industry,” states Dudley.
Not only have investments in education contributed to the salon’s growing client base, it is shared with the community. In nine years of operation, the salon has raised over $22,000 for breast health making donations to The City of Hope, Milton Hospital’s Breast Health Unit, and last year over $12,000 for South Shore Hospital’s Breast Care Center and became members of the hospital’s “Presidents Circle.” The team has raised $12,000 for the NYC Restaurant Worker’s Union to extend the health benefits for children of 911 victims and $12,000 for the South Shore Hospital’s new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We seem to be at our best when we have a cause that we’re uniting for,” states Honeycutt. “We are so grateful to work with a team of professionals who share our commitment to charitable efforts.”
